VIP unit in motorsport: what to look for in a paddock structure
Why the paddock is its own playing field
A motorsport weekend such as the 24H of Spa places high demands on temporary structures. Space in the paddock is limited, build time is short, and the image of a team or brand has to be right from the start. Anyone looking to set up a VIP unit for motorsport or a branded paddock structure quickly runs into the same questions: how much space do I need, how fast can it be set up, and how do I stand out among all the other teams? In this article we outline the key considerations, using a recent project for Iron Dames as an example.
1. Making the most of a small footprint
In the paddock, every square metre counts. A double-storey hospitality setup solves this elegantly: you double the usable space without any extra ground area. For the Iron Dames project we used the ground floor as a fan and sales area and the upper floor for a SIM race simulator, with a rooftop terrace as well. This way you combine audience experience, sales and your own vantage point in a single structure.
2. Build time and transport
Event planning rarely leaves room for a long build. Foldable units have the advantage here: they fold together, so ten units fit on one truck. That reduces transport trips to the circuit and ensures a fast build on location. So when renting a temporary event structure, always ask how transport and setup are arranged.
3. Branding that stands out
At a circuit, your structure stands among dozens of others. A fully branded unit makes the difference. For Iron Dames we finished the entire structure in the pink brand identity, including the facade panels and the theme 'Women Driven by Dreams'. This way the brand activation wasn't something stuck on top, but part of the structure itself. Points to watch for:
- Can all visible panels be printed?
- Does the branding hold up in the wind and weather of the paddock?
- Does the layout match what your audience needs to experience?
4. Matching function to your goal
A unit can be many things: a backstage or changing room, a bar unit at a festival, a trade fair stand, or hospitality with a rooftop terrace. Decide in advance which function takes the lead. For Iron Dames that was fan experience and sales downstairs, and a simulator experience upstairs. This clear division of roles makes the layout logical for visitors and ensures a natural flow, even when a queue forms.
5. Comfort and safety for the audience
As soon as the public enters and moves around the structure, practical matters count: a sturdy staircase to the upper level, a balustrade on the rooftop terrace, and a neat ramp or decking at the entrance. These details also help determine how professional your structure looks and how comfortably visitors can move.
In short
A successful paddock or hospitality structure comes down to four things: smart use of space, fast setup, strong branding and a layout that suits your goal. Foldable units make this achievable, even within the tight constraints of a motorsport weekend.
